Beds

Cyr Designs, LLC
Cyr Designs, LLC is the proud maker of the Courtney Bed, a hand-crafted pediatric Special Needs bed for children who have a cognitive disability and need a safe place to sleep. The Courtney Bed is a great alternative to a standard hospital bed and is designed for children with cerebral palsy, Autism, Down Syndrome, Angelman Syndrome or mental retardation.

Enclosed Crib/Bed Design
Carson was in need of a bigger bed as he grew. Joe Cutolo had originally crafted an enclosure out of PVC piping to keep him in bed (enclosed around the dimensions of the bed, fastened to the floor). The Cutolo’s wanted something off the floor, but the ability to use a normal bed to help the transition. Joe enlisted the aid of his neighbor, Bill, who builds furniture as a hobby! He came over one night, they explained what they had wanted and about a week later he came up with this design. They decided to use pine, which was soft, yet sturdy. As you can see from his design, the entire project cost roughly $150 for materials. Once it was built, it took them about an hour to put together. It was exceptionally safe and sturdy. The gates at the end allowed the Cutolo's easy access and it didn’t give him the “cage” feel or look. But it gave the Cutolo’s the satisfaction once he was in for the night, they knew he was safe and secure!

Books

Jade and the Walking Stick

Inspired by the story of a young girl with Angelman Syndrome, Jade and the Walking Stick is a fantastical tale of a special needs child coping with the challenges in her life. Written for the author’s daughter, the book symbolizes the developmental milestones common to special needs children through a fantasy fiction narrative. A fable of acceptance and triumph, Jade and the Walking Stick should inspire others to face all of life’s challenges with a smile. Angelman Syndrome (AS) is a chromosomal disorder which causes severe developmental delay and physical/mental handicaps. Children with AS typically require an assistive device (usually a walker) until they learn to walk on their own (usually between 5 and 8 years of age). Individuals with AS (or “angels” as their known) very seldom learn to speak, and if they do, they usually only have a vocabulary of 1-10 words. AS children are known for their unusually happy demeanor and wide, bright smile. “Angels” make friends wherever they go because they are almost always laughing and smiling.

Park

Morgan's Wonderland
The inspiration for Morgan’s Wonderland originated in 2006 when philanthropist Gordon Hartman observed a poignant occurrence involving his daughter Morgan, a child with special needs, and a group of other children. All were on vacation splashing in a hotel swimming pool. Morgan appeared as if she wanted to take part in the fun, and the others exhibited similar interest in interacting with Morgan. Unfortunately, the connection never materialized.

Hartman thought then and there how wonderful it would be to create a special place for special friends. It would be an environment for inclusion and understanding. It would be an oasis for those needing a safe place to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Hartman quickly learned that millions of children and adults with cognitive and physical challenges generally do not have access to facilities specifically established to assist them in enjoying outdoor activities.
