Conquering the Canyon to Help Conquer Angelman Syndrome
The Grand Canyon, often described as one of the seven natural wonders of the world, served as the inspiration and motivation for a courageous and dedicated group of hikers that set off September 23-26, 2010, on a quest to conquer the canyon in an effort to raise awareness and funds in support of Angelman Syndrome Foundation. Nine adult hikers along with one Angelman child representing Team Angelman Syndrome Foundation came together to test their physical limits to provide help and hope to thousands of children and families who themselves are tested on a daily basis with the physical demands of this rare neurogenetic disorder. “The courage and accomplishments of this amazing group of individuals is a powerful example of the difference that can be made when people unite for a common purpose,” commented Eileen Braun, Executive Director of Angelman Syndrome Foundation.
In partnership with Conquer the Canyon and Walking Connections, hikers experienced the rolling hills of the Canyon’s rim to the steep descents into the Canyon of up to 3,000 feet. During the four-day hiking adventure, Team Angelman Syndrome Foundation, that included Woody Miller, Eric Wright, Brad McGarry, Connor McGarry, Ryan McGarry, Aimee Setterberg, Selina Ruiz, Stephanie Keen, Alexandra Arellano, and Jennifer Guzzarde, experienced the majestic beauty and splendid landscape of the Canyon while hiking on behalf of all who are touched by Angelman Syndrome. To date, Team Angelman Syndrome Foundation has raised $17,000 against a goal of $35,000.
Every step taken during their hiking adventure represents a step closer to our final destination, powerful treatments and an eventual cure for Angelman Syndrome. We are proud that Team ASF has, indeed, conquered the Canyon, but, their adventure still continues. To conquer Angelman Syndrome, we need your support and partnership.
